For those of you shoveling out from under several feet of snow, I'll give you a little chuckle! -- Here in central Texas we woke up today to 1/4 inch of snow on the ground -- with the sun shining it certainly was not about to last -- however, in central Texas -- a little snow and the world stops!! Present temp is 50 degrees so the snow is gone! But I can assure you there were rolls and rolls of film taken around town today! Those of us from the "north country" just set back and chuckle -- then go about our business!

Hello from Kansas. Dennis I enjoy reading your daily reports as this keeps me informed as to what is going on back home. My husbnad, Garry and daughter Jessica came down to visit Jackie Fischer for the Christmas holiday. Had a really great time. Also spenttime with Kevin Fischer, my brother. Was looking at your pictures of employees and did not see Lois Hansen? Hope you can get her picture on your web site soon especially since she accepted a diamond from Kevin over the holidays. Wish everyone in Maquoketa and the surrounding areas a Safe and Happy New Year! We have about half the snow you have in Iowa and today it is suppose to be in get up to 12 degrees. Do you have more snow in Maquoketa than we do? Sure has been a tough, cold December... Dick did get his deer with a little extra help, but the snow is really too deep to hunt pheasants very well. Received many nice christmas cards from Maquoketa friends... Always good to hear from the Rankins,Kinrades,Kirks,Myers,Swieters,Koonz and Olsons... Hopefully, 2001 will be good for all of Iowa... A late Merry Christmas and good to hear from you all.....Dick and Linda Ades, in N.W. Iowa

hi dennis, this has been one xmas i will prob never forget. first off our girls whitney and megan desided they wanted to move up here in reno with us. so there college semester ended dec.17 and we flew one way on the 22nd to hemet ca 2 hour flight delay to uhaul them up here with us... we left today xmas day to drive home..we start out pretty good then have to drive cajhone pass,so windy i didnt see jim he ended up pulling the uhaul over for 30 mins till the winds died down,,but whitney and i in the car kept going following the white line on the interstate with white out from dirt and sand blowing...we get onto the 395 north and 20 miles into the treck sierens blaring they pass us and we come upon a real bad accident with 2 guys getting ejected from a small foreienge car cause of no seat belts...one being thrown across the hwy and the other man being given cpr by paramedics...what a groosome sight...well jim finally got on his way and came upon the same accident, a police officer was holding traffic at a distance while emergency crew were working on the accident....so jim kindof gets a lump in his throat and ask the office if the car was red..mine is red...he didnt know so he radios down and finds out it was a forigen car..mine is a plymouth...well as you can imagine he was very relieved....we finally met up in bishop and had breakfast...the rest of the way home was uneventful other then unloading the uhaul..thats done now with boxes piled in my garage and jim complaining that his 66 mustang has to stay outside for one night...lol...but we are safe and warm and very tired..and glad to be home. one last thing, we are so glad we dont have your snow here. always connie beller allbaugh.

Thanks for the recent weather reports on the snow and cold. I remember now why I left the farm South of Monmouth right after high school graduation. Just a lot of rain in Oregon this time of year but don't have to shovel IT!!
Merry Christmas to all old friends in Jackson County.

Just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a super and safe holiday season(whichever Holiday you choose to celebrate!) As long as I have lived in central Texas, it just never seems like Christmas -- too warm, no snow! If any of you ever travel down this way -- head down I-35 and find yourself near Waco, give me a holler -- would love to chat over old times and hometown!

Reading your guest book this morning and noted some entries from some of my kinfolks and classmates of 1949. Like your web site Dennis. Very well done. We have had snow on the ground now for about a week which is unusual for this area. temperatures at night in the low single digets and below freezing for a week also. Reminds me of Iowa and Maquoketa weather. Happy holidays to ya'll and sty in touch. Herman and family.

Hello from sunny Amarillo. We, too, are a four season
state, only thing is we get it all in one week. It is 60
degrees out today and supposed to get snow tomorrow night!
This is common though here in the Panhandle of Texas.
I hear my cousin, Shirley Paulsen, saw my posting from an
earlier date and called my mother to tell her I made a mistake about her father, Lavern Eye, and my uncle, Garlyn
Galloway working the taxi stand. She is right, it was my
Uncle Frank Shirley, not Garlyn. I must have been thinking
"Cab" Calloway (Taxi Galloway) It was just a "senior moment". Anyway Merry Christmas to any of my relatives out
in KMAQ land and to the good people of Maquoketa. From
posting the last time, I received an EMail from a long lost
cousin I had not heard from in about 40 years, Ted Prindle.
Maybe I will hear from others? Hope so.
Stay Warm

You people take it easy with all that shoveling. Hosing off the driveway sure beats all that shoveling. (In Dennis' terms, LOVE IT) Sounds as tho' you have to get out the red hankies on the antenas to be seen over the snow banks. Questioned whether to wear a sweater this a.m.,(70 DEGREES) but decided against it. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL IN THE MAQUOKETA AREA.

Dennis I think it's about time to have Shirley and Ron send us up some of that Arizona sunshine and HEAT don't you ? I have been shoving enough snow around down here, in not so sunny southern Iowa til I'm sick of it. I'll give in and let the kids have one day after Christmas so they can slid around in the snow but then we need a melt down right ? Well
it's definitely like are good old ones back in the 40's but not as bad as 36. At least we got something to talk about after the appointment by the supreme court. I guess I'll put a "FINISH" on this by saying MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OUT THERE IN KMAQ LAND and go 49er's. As ever Ron

Oh boy, it is a bitterly cold day up here in Packerland! Tried to go to the drive-thru at the bank today, but my window was iced shut. Went to fill my car up with gas, and the gas tank cover was frozen shut. Almost got in an accident because the snow is piled so high on the corners and I can barely see over them. Hopefully this cold weather doesn't follow me home to Maquoketa this weekend!

Dennis, we've got three inches of snow this morning in the Capitol of the sunny South, and the city is virtually shut down. A few of us former Northerners made it to work -- actually had fun driving in. No rush hour traffic this morning and my normal 45 minute commute took about 20 minutes. However, it's probably the last snow we'll see for another couple of years. And after today, y'all can keep it in Maquoketa for at least that long. I'm ready for Spring!

Hi to all and Happy Holidays from the land of the North-We do so enjoy reading the guest book and have made some renewed friendships by corresponding with guests. Yes I agree with one of your guests that Maquoketa has had a tremendous impact on many lives. I am always grateful that my roots were there-not a perfect place but darned good. Thanks to all who sent 50th anniversary wishes to my parents Bob and Mary Devine last month. Glad to report they are both healthy and doing well. I was sorry to hear of the loss of Jim and Mary Ellen Kirks grandson. I used to babysit for them and my dad said Jim was the best mechanic he ever knew. They are wonderful people and I am sorry for their loss-especially at the holidays. My grandpa Ed Black-Preston Times editor for over 50 years was buried on Christmas Eve and there isnt a holiday I dont think of that. My husband Carlyle Keeney and I plus our 3 boys wish you the best for the new year. Anyone from the class of 69-hence the webpage address-please feel free to correspond with us. Thanks again to all the people of Maquoketa in the 50's-60's and 70's who were instrumental in building the town that is our hometown. Carl and Susan Devine Keeney

We may even have a white Christmas for first time in many, many years. Total of 8+ inches of snow in this little town. Streets were plowed this evening before I got home, I park on the street, hope I can get back out in the morning to go to work. Sure makes me think of Maquoketa when I see all this snow. It's been a little cooler here I think about 70 or so yesterday, so we can spare a little for you I think. It's funny to me to think of Maquoketa as an Iowa State Cyclone town. I read all these things about Sage Rosenfels and I think to myself, "Did they change just because of him?" I remember Maquoketa being a strong Hawkeye town. Dennis, you mentioned Iowa playing Iowa State in basketball and how Iowa State has a good team. Hello? They're both quite good and a little positive Hawk talk would be nice to see again. Make sure you mention who won the game sometime. : )

Hi from Amarillo. Sure enjoy checking this site to see if
any of my relatives turn up, either as signees, obits or in the police reports! I have lots of relatives back there
in the Maquoketa area. My mom's maiden name was Shirley
and mine is Eye. My mom, Phyllis Eye worked for a couple
of years at the Green Mill. To this day she can't stand
the song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." Seems for awhile it
was played over and over and over on the jukebox. Also
my Aunt Loretta Gallaway worked at the Clinton Engines for
a long time. My mom also worked at a place called The
Fishing Tackle. They made fishing lures. Two of my
uncles, Lavern Eye and Garlyn Gallaway ran a cab stand
that was located next to Marcussis Tavern. Anyone remember
any of them? Thanks for the site. Sharon Henderson

Hello,
I just heard about a book that was written and published by a Maquoketa native and I wondered if anyone could help me locate a copy I could give to my mom (Mary (Gibson)Dague.
The title of the book is The Changing of The Guard, written by John Scholl in 1963. The publisher is Simon & Schuster of New York. Does anyone know anything about the book or the author? I heard about it from a travel agent here in Brainerd, at Paulsons travel. Jan Paulson lived in Maquoketa for awile, while her husband worked at none other than Clinton Engines. It truly is a small world, to be here in Minnesota, and run into someone else that was born in Maquoketa, Iowa. Most people don't know how to say it or spell it, and here her son Eric was born there. UFFDA, never know who you will into.
Thanks for the help that anyone could be in locating the book, Mom lives up here by me now and I think it would help her to pass the long cold winter to read it, as no matter how hard my husband tries she still will not snowmobile with us.
Happy Holidays to all

Enjoy reading what is happening in the old hometown; have been gone since 1957. Does anyone there have Barbara Lindblad Veit's address? The last I heard she was in Colorado in the Denver area. Now that our son and his family are living in the area, I would like to try to look her up when we are there. I read some people talking about the Hayes Cafe and the Green Mill. My grandparents, Jim and Rose Current used to own them. Unfortunately, and to my surprise, nobody in Denver knows what a Maid-Rite IS! Loved the Cinamon Rolls at Hayes and Green Mill. But, the maid-rites, they were the best! Have to make a trip to Bell. when I'm back just to get one, now. Dennis, really enjoy the daily report, get a good chuckle out of it sometimes! I read the Maq. newspaper as well, but "Dennis' angle" seems to be just a little different sometimes! Keep it up. Oh, and be ready, the frigid cold we've been having here is heading your way!

As Chairman of the committee proposing the construction of "The A.R.C." in Maquoketa, I would like to get my e-mail address out there! For those of you that read Dennis' Daily Report he seems to think "The A.R.C." won't go. Help my committee out, tell me why it won't, tell me what to do to make it fly! We didn't have much input at our public meeting so I'll have to try to get "e-input"! Send ideas, concerns, questions, and yes, donations or donation leads to my e-mail address! People have sold Maquoketa short too many times in the past when it has come to getting a "great" building built in town - let's not sell this short before it even gets off the ground! "Dare to dream".

Just about cold enough here for snow this a.m. 41 degrees. Don't care too much for this below normal stuff and have had 24 days in a row of it.

Captain Gratzer,
Happy Veterans Day, 2000.
I hope all is well with you and all the rest of the American Vets throughout
the world. It is sad for those involved in any conflict or peace keeping
mission, but pray for their safety and speedy return to their homes and
family.
I have to share with you an unfriendly story.
I was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa a few weeks ago for some work training. Our hotel
was on the outskirts of town and not a lot of entertainment nearby as we
didn't have a car. There was a VFW club within half a block. After a ten hour
class and 2 more hours of study, I wanted a beer. I walked over to the VFW
and explained that I was a Vet, a former member of the VFW and had not
reinstated because of relocation and no acceptable facility to rejoin and all
I wanted was to relax and have a couple of drinks. The bartender stated that
I either had to be a current member or have someone sign me in, a rule which
I was aware of and understood. I asked an old fart sitting at the bar if he
would sign me in, I would by him a drink. He looked away and acted as if I
was panhandling, then another old fart sitting at the other end of the bar
with a couple of his buddies shouted out,

Sure I remember Lorin Felderman. He bought my father's farm north of Fulton in 1955--300 acres, for $50,000--which Dad thought was a princely sum. Dad then bought a little house on South Vermont and moved to town.
And talk about Maid-rites--my neighbor on South Forth Street, a Mrs. Wright(I think her name was Minnie) ran a Maid-right and Root beer stand. It was just across from the old county jail.
I appreciate getting the Maquoketa news, though I am appalled at drug-related crime. Too bad--in my day the drug of choice was boot-leg liquor, white lightning.I tasted it once, and that was enough.

Ofcourse I remember Lorin Felderman. When I read the baby's fathers name the first thing that occured was that it must be a relative. He was the sherrif early on and I remember Mary Belle more vividly. She was a beautiful, sweet woman and a heck of a nurse if I remember correctly. I read the other names in the births. Not only did I know both sets of grandparents-Dick Merrick and Jack Kuhlman-they graduated only a few years ahead of me. How can that be-when I am only 16 myself. We do enjoy the web page-thank you for taking the time to do it. Also, my parents Bob and Mary Devine -Blue Cross insurance salesman -will celebrate their 50th on Saturday Nov 4. Yes I remember Sheriff Lorin Felderman well he sort of told me to ease up on the gas a little if you know what I mean, in 1950 While in L.A. I was in a big hurry to at the Pacific
Electric terminal downtown to get to the subway to Hollywood
to see Art Linkletter's Openhouse show and I bumped in to a
gentleman and knock him on his kester and lo and behold it was Charley Gibson Lorin's deputy, he was out there to pick up a prisoner. Nobody but nobody made better Maid-Rite's that Ed Turnquist. As Ever Ron

Hello Maquoketa!
I haven't been around here for awhile so I thought I would
stop in and say hello.
Does anyone remember MAID-RITES? I think there is a Maid-rite
restaurant in Marion, Iowa.
My Grandmother, Carrie Varner, who turned 87 years
young on Friday, Oct. 27, use to waitress in Maquoketa.
She has been widowed since May 27, 1992. My Grandfather
was Arthur B. Varner whose father was Armstrong Varner.
Is there any living relatives? I would love to get in contact with.
Also, Grandmother Carrie's maternal Grandmother was
Mary Marie (Merrick) [daughter of a Dennis LeRoy Merrick]
and I think a Susan E.. -Arterberry-Hill.
Are there any Merricks around "The Maq" area that is related
to me, please contact. My father is Carl Massey, Sr.,
who married Betty Lou (Varner) [May 31, 1930-March 20, 1979). He remarried
in 1995 to a widow from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They currently
live in Lisbon, Iowa.
I am looking for my father's mother's family. Her name
was Nettie ELiza (Rannals) Masscey/Massey. Her father
was Tom or Thomas Rannals who married Adelia "Annie"
Anna Barkley (daughter of Henry Barkley and Elizabeth
Simon, of New York. Any relatives out there or anywhere
please contact me.
My father said that there was or used to be a barber in town
with the last name Merrick. (If anyone plans to have a
haircut there, please ask for me if he is related to
Dennis LeRoy Merrick who was born somewhere in Indiana
on April 4, 1855 and lived and died in Baldwin, Iowa
on May 25, 1942. I need to know who his parents/siblings
were, and who was his wife and her family.
Thank you for allowing me to post here.
I love and miss Maquoketa. Take care all!!

Just discovered this web page and find it very interesting. Bob and I left Maquoketa in 1978 and have been living in Denver, Ia ever since. Bob has been retired from Blue Cross since l987. He does consutlting work at several banks in the area. Helps people with Medicare claims and find it very rewarding. He tries to play golf every day that he can. Our children are spread in several states. Minnesota to Texas. We have 19 grandchildren. Alot of them active in sports and that keeps us on the go. One of the oldest is a Senior at Wartburg college in Waverly and plays on the football team. Is captain this year. Was a three time All-American last year. So our Saturdays in the fall are spent travelling around Iowa watching him play. He played one year at UNI and transferred to Wartburg and they have only lost one game since he has been there. Hope to spend a couple of weeks in Texas this winter. We have 3 children there and Bob has a brother and I have a sister. Bob has lots of fond memories of working at KMAQ. He still loves Big Band music. I keep busy with many hobbies and keeping Bob in line. Been doing that for almost 50 years. We have lived here longer than any other place but Maquoket still seems like home to us.

Greetings from Alaska. Wanted to say thank you from Alaska and its Four-Pawed Friends to anyone involved in the Purina donation of 22 tons of dog food to aid our dog mushing community. It's incredible how generosity spans so many miles from Iowa to Alaska. Because the supply of fish was so low, the mushing community which depends upon those fish to feed its dogs was devastated. It was feared they would starve. Charities purchased 6,000 pounds of frozen fish, and Alaskans contributed thousands of pounds of dog food, but Iowa really came to the rescue. Whether it comes to helping humans or their four-pawed friends, Iowans and Alaskans do it best. I'm proud to have come from Iowa. Thank you. Jacqueline

If you are ever out this way, do give me a call. Fall is still givng us temps in the high 80's, but after leaving Iowa in'54, I'm used to it and love it here. I went to my first CUBS game last Friday, they lost to the Astros 13-10. It was a good game and Sammy hit a homer. I don't think I missed anything during the 2 innings that I passed out..the beer flows heavily at Wrigley. The incident of two children torching another child unfortunately also reached Alaska as a little news blurb. Not the kind of thing you want to hear from your home community. Unfortunately, this type of thing happens with increasing frequency. I'm wondering if anyone has considered sending this young burn victim to the Shriner's Hospital - Burn Facility - in Cincinnati. Wonderful things happen in those hospitals, and one thing that is definitely missing in a Shriner's Hospital is a "cash register". Bottom line is excemplary medical care - not how much money or insurance the victim/victim's family has. The snow is moving down the mountainside and getting closer to town. We call it "termination dust". Weather has been cool and beautiful; trees are turning glorious colors right before your eyes! Winter is on its way. Dennis, please pass on my birthday wishes to Red today. He was our mail carrier for many years back when there were rural routes instead of high numbered "streets". He was also a long time friend of my folks, my mother used to whistle on the radio with him when they were "youngsters". Enjoy keeping up with local news...wish my brothers up there were get into the computer age. Graduated from Maquoketa in 57, plan to be home for the next reunion. HOpefully will get up there sooner, maybe when the college here is on holiday or spring break. Anyone who remembers me, I look forward to e-mail.

I and my wife, Marilyn, visited Maquoketa a couple of weeks ago. We had an opportunity to see Nancy Voy and Bob & Karen Thomas, having lunch in their new business venture on Main Street. We stopped to say hello to Ross & Betty Davis at their office, now somewhat isolated with the new highway. In the evening at the Maquoketa Country Club, we had dinner with Bill & Mary Lou Risser, John & Ann Wagoner, Roger & Jennie Stewart, and Dave & Sharon Johnson.
Great to see the community and friends once again.
The following day, in Dubuque, at the Olive Garden, a coincidental meeting with Dennis Mans, former Lab Director at the Jackson County Public Hospital, now at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Dennis' wife, Alice, has now assumed the position Dennis formerly held at JCPH, also held by me in the years 1968 - 1980, when I turned the reins over to Dennis. Twenty years have passed quickly since our departure from Iowa, however the fond memories of Maquoketa remain.

I am still looking for relatives of Dennis Leroy Merrick (parents/siblings anyone I can contact). Is there a Judy Chuck that posted here as the gr-gr granddaughter of Dennis? I am his gr-gr- granddaughter also. Dennis's daughter Mary Marie (Merrick) Arterberry Hill married a Thomas William or William Thomas Merrick, when he died she remarried. She married Thomas William Hill. Thomas William Arterberry and Mary Marie had several children. Their first, Carrie Mae (Arterberry) Varner (widow of Arthur "Art" Burnett Varner (son of Armstrong Varner and LaVina (Kimbrough/Kimbrow) Varner. Carrie Mae and Arthur had my mother, Betty Lou (Varner) Massey (D. March 20, 1979).
I also am looking for Thomas Rannals parents (he was born
Jan 22, 1853 in Niles, Ohio, but lived and died in Baldwin, Jackson Co., Iowa. By the way, Dennis LeRoy Merrick was born April 4, 1855 and lived and died on May 25, 1942, in Baldwin, Jackson Co., Iowa. So any living relatives of Massey, Masscey, Rannals, Merrick, Varner, I would love to hear from. Thanks again for this great site. Hello to all of Maquoketa (don't grow up too fast!) Mary Lou

Hi to all-what fun to read all your emails and hear so many familiar names. I heard of your site from my friend Mary Anne McAreavy when I called her for her 50th birthday yesterday. I loved reading the history of KMAQ-my dad Bob Devine the Blue Cross Insurance salesman was on the radioi I think in the late 50's. He was on Sunday afternoons, his theme song was Moonlight Serenade and we girls used to go to the station to help him. We listened for news to come over the teletype then tear it off with a ruler and take it to him to read on the air. I remember when Dennis and his wife were married-if I am not mistaken there was a wedding shower at Eva Mae Saunders house. What fond memories I have and find that I am more nostalgic as I grow older. For those who may know my family, my parents were Bob and Mary Devine who will be celebrating their 50th on Nov 4. Their address is mdevine827@cs.com. I have 7 siblings who grew up there too and we lived in the big house on South Prospect street that used to belong to Dr. Franks mother. My grandpa was Ed Black who was the editor of the Preston Times for 50 years so our roots to Jackson County are deep. My husband-also from Maquoketa though I didnt know him there and met him in Albuquerque is Carlyle Keeney. His mom Lucille Keeney worked at Clinton Engines for 25 years as did my dad so we like to hear Clinton Engines stories. I have always been so grateful to have grown up in Maquoketa. It was not perfect, but nowhere is and it and its residents have given me a strong work ethic and a sense of community that stays with me yet. I am a nurse and head up a neurorehab unit in Minneapolis-live in the suburb of Maple Grove home of our illustrious big mouth governor Jesse Ventura. His daughter is in our sons home room so we keep current with his escapades. Would love to hear from any or all who have connections with me,my family and my husbands family. I am always proud to be a Maquoketan. Susan Devine Keeney

It's nice to have name recognition that extends to Alaska. Charlie Marcucci owned the candy store in Clinton and was my grandfathers (Emil's) cousin I think. It's amazing how many people remember the Clinton candy store and ask me about it--I remember being in it once in the early 60s. Believe Charlie and Emil came to America from Lucca,Italy--near Pisa when they were kids. Emil and Helen owned a tavern in Maquoketa for many years--right next to the "Shifty" Davis barber shop (which had the worlds most extensive collection of rabbit trophies on display!). The (Marcucci) tavern was open in the morning when people would get off the night shift from Clinton Engines. Beer was 15 cents a glass. My maternal ancestors were Sagers/Edwards/Gilmore people from the East Iron Hill metro area. Paul and Nettie Sagers were my grandparents.

Just stumbled across your great site. Great idea Dennis and obviously appreciated by many exiled "Maquoketans". I'm wondering if there are any other displaced Jackson County Folks in the northeast US? FYI--gas is (still) $1.75/gallon, there are no Iowa chops, maidrites, Caves, or 61 Drive-Ins. Maquoketa paper of last weekend lists an upcoming event at the Delmar Depot on Setp 10 that is so worthwhile to see. Mary McClain from Des Moines does a FREE Orphan Train presentation. She is a winter resident in the Active Adult Community we live in all year around. I have seen her presentation here and it is a little known amazing history story with pictures and clothes to go with the story. Maquoketa's Bill Sagers, Sr., as well as mother and two aunts of Mary's were passengers on an Orphan Train. It is a "MUST SEE".

Was so in hopes of coming to Maquoketa this past week. Gloria Jaynes Johnston was returning with her husband and the old group of friends were getting together. Weddings in Cedar Rapids put a hex to our plans.
Hear quite often from Etta and Dale Koons, Sandra and Jim Kinrade, the Swieters and old memories do come back.
Talking about the fair this week, I remember when Dick worked the fair, helping with security... BIg names came to the fair then.. We remember TEx Ritter too. Gene Autry was always great. THere was always harness racing, kids tractor pulls and the big carnival. The BOwmans, Jim and Jr were always involved in the horse racing. Bert Kendall was one of the board members then... Lots of hours went into the planning of the fair. Harold Millwright, the postmaster had good ideas... Oh yes, the drive in south of town ws always a winner... Lots of homemade popcorn and koolaid was brought in to the parking area... GOod entertainment for families back then. Hope to get to Maquoketa, one of these days and enjoy old friends, and a bit of golf.

It was great visiting the Maquoketa area again. Lot of old memories as I passed the 61 Drive In on my way from the Moline Airport to Maquoketa. Great school reunion in Monmouth, big turnout and I was able to renew many long time acquaintances and old friendships. Stayed with Dick Ward and that's an experience in itself! Don't know how Linda puts up with him. Visited my aunt in Maquoketa, cousins in Wyoming and Onslow, played golf in Wyoming with Don and Earlene, had breakfast at the Sunrise in Maquoketa with Wilma Jean. Thanks Dennis for the website. I check it several times each week. A couple of embarrassing moments orchestrated by Dick Ward and Wayne Current. Since getting even is for sissies, I plan on getting ahead. Have a great day.

Beller Allbaugh I in the afore message referred to her as kid and in reality she is now a fine young lady but the last
time I seen this young lady she was a kid. I'm sorry Connie.
I suppose that is why we oldster do not recognize some of our old acquaintance's, becaus we remember them as last seen
and we can't seem to change that until we are made aware of
the new image. Back to the past, how many of the oldster's
remember the downtown Main St. Pancake days with the free

Well here I am in good shape for the shape I'm in I have had
my hands full first with campaigning by the way I lost to a
nice young lady which is alright by me. My wife has been very ill and we've been making many trips to Iowa City and
finally had an operation and isn't getting along to well so
I've been the househusband for the last couple of months and
I also bought another house and am in the process of getting
it ready to rent. Ah yes the Fair I had every intention of
getting back for it but as you can see I had my hands full.
I remember seeing Leroy Van Dyke at the Jackson County Fair
back in the 60's. I remember the Fair when it was down at the old baseball diamond by the bottle works I even remember
seeing Claude Beck in his Army Air Force uniform there making all the girls hearts beat a little faster quite handsome in that uniform. In those days there were more free
acts Juggling, Tap dancing, dance bands, & Etc. I still miss
the Fair and stock car races there. Oh well you can't do it
all but you sure and remember. To show you how long ago since I've been there I was driving a new 70 Mustang the last time I was there and ran into Bob Risser and his wife.
I try and keep in better touch between cooking and cleaning
Ha! I least I know I'll be back in two years for sure right
CLASS OF 49 ? Everyone of you Maquoketans take care out
there where ever you may be. By the way to that Beller kid
I was best man at your Folks wedding in Wisconsin.

Hi Dennis, it was nice meeting you at the fair. I'm the lady from Texas, Susan Lorey (was Susan Fording). My grandparents were Jim & Ethel Shields, Carl & Florence Gnade, and Mildred Shirk. It was great to visit Iowa again. Haven't been back to visit for about five years. My husband, two children and I stayed with my folks John (father) and Mona Eastman and had a great time. When you snowbirds come back down to TX in the winter -- give this ol' Maquoketa girl a holler -- I'm retired from the State of TX now and would love to make a trip down to the Valley and "snowbird land" to visit with some of you. I now live Deep In the Heart of Texas so I'm only a few hours from the Rio Valley.

ATTENTION: We have lost 4+ months worth of Guestbook entries.. Something corrupted the guestbook file...... We have lost entries all the way back to Dec 1999. I managed to have a copy saved locally on my Hard Drive and brought us back to March 2000.
If anyone has BY SOME CHANCE this Guestbook page saved on their Hard Drive, please let Dennis or myself know.
If you have submitted a guestbook entry and its gone we appologize, and ask you to please post again.

So glad to see that you have nearly 21,000 hits on your Daily Report site! It's been a long time since we were in Maquoketa, but think that number is larger than the population. Weather has been beautiful in Alaska. Just finished our big winter celebration called Fur Rendezvous. We're ready to start the Iditarod Sled Dog races next week. Thank you, Dennis, for the great sampling of Iowas hospitality in your report each day.

Hi everyone. I'm looking for help in an contest. I'm hoping everyone will help a fellow Maquoketan and vote for story #16 at the following website. Votes have to be in by Feb. 28..so there's not much time. If I win, we will receive a horse blanket that one of our race horses will proudly wear at the Maquoketa horse races this summer!! The last I looked I was down 100 votes! Afraid to look again, everytime I check I'm down more. But I'm sure if everyone takes a sec and votes, it'll make a huge difference! Remember its story #16! http://www.reach.net/~victlane/ then scroll down to about the middle of the page to CONTEST OVER Choose and Vote For Your Favourite click and then 'rock the vote'! Thanks in advance, Mary Ronek

Dear Dennis: Along with other folks, I missed getting the news. I had been in Florida for about 10 days, came home and wanted to catch up on the Maquoketa news, but couldn't. While I was gone we had an ice storm-one of the occasional prices we pay for living here. The electricity was out for 2 days, and of course, no heat. Fortunately we weren't home, but weren't much warmer in Florida. Came home to find my plants, indoors had been nipped, apparently frost-bit. And my TV antenna had been hit by a falling branch and was toppled over. Sorry to hear of Hariss Penrose's passing. I remember him well. We always did our tire business with him--he must have had almost all the tire sales in Maquoketa in the late 30's. Apparently bought several farms at depression prices, so hope he was comfortable in his old age. 'Twas an interesting sidelight about Kurt Warner playing at Goodenow field. I appreciate those little stories.

Greetings from Alaska; haven't checked in for a while so had a pleasant time getting up-to-date on all the news. The tragic Alaska Airlines crash unfortunately was not the first for the airline. I believe there was a fatal plane crash about 25 years ago. It is one of the safest airlines in the country, however. In recent days we have also had winds clocked at more than 100 miles per hour - major snow storms - and avalanches, the most recent of which claimed the life of a 21 year Alaska Railroad employee. He was one of the employees setting dynamite blasts to help in preventing more avalanches. Sadly, he was caught in one. Days like these make us might homesick for Iowa. Thank you again, Dennis. Reading your reports and reading the guestbook greetings is like sitting around the kitchen table in a good old Iowa farm kitchen and having a chat with friends.

I can't recall anytime when I played bingo but, I called Bingo for Ten Years at the Eagles Club in Fairfeild, Iowa one thing about it the people tend to get a little irate when you don't call that one number they need to make a bingo.
