The 61 Drive-In Theatre, 5 miles South of Maquoketa, opened in August of
1950.
It will be celebrating its 55th Anniversary in August.
Dennis Voy has owned it since 1972.
It was buildt by
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Franklin
and
Mr. and Mrs. Walt Allen.
The Franklins (divorced) are still living today.
Here is a picture of Walt Allen.
The photo was taken in 1975 and he died in 1977 at the age of 59.
After selling the 61 Drive-In, he buildt another drive-in at the Quad Cities.
Also a regular "hardtop" theatre. This picture was sent to us by
his son, Jeff Allen,
who lives in Texas and visits Maquoketa every couple of years,
worked at the drive-in when a kid, and still has fond memories of the 61
Drive-In,
now only one of three operating in the State of Iowa, and very popular with
movie fans
in a 75-mile radious of Maquoketa.
LONGTIME MAQUOKETA (RETIRED) BUSINESSMAN JERRY RASMUSSEN AND WIFE DOROTHY,
AT THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB "FLY-IN" BREAKFAST
SUNDAY AT THE AIRPORT.
This is the new Maquoketa Middle School Entrance.
It was added to the South side of the building.
The addition also included new administrative and staff offices, which were
on 2nd floor.
This photo was taken standing on ther right side looking to the left.
The black drain tiles on the ground along front will be buried later.
Here is another shot of new entrance to Maquoketa Middle School.
This time I was standing to the left of building, looking to the right.
The high school is also getting an addition and in late April,
the plan is to have a public open house at both schools to show-off the new
additions.
This photo was taken from
the front of new Middle School Entrance, looking to the South.
A home was taken down and the result was the open lot which will be the new
Middle School parking lot.
In the background, one of the city water towers, located just West of the
City Swimming Pool.
