Saturday, October 24,1998

Greetings. The Maquoketa Cardinal football team lost to Manchester West Delaware last night at Goodenow Field, but still has a chance for the playoffs. In our District, two teams can go. Manchester, undefeated and either Maquoketa or DeWitt. The Cardinals host DeWitt this coming Friday night and the winner goes to the playoffs. I would say DeWitt is favored, but Maquoketa has the home field advantage so it should be a great game.....And, also in local sports...the Maquoketa girls Cross Country team returns to the State Meet this year, on October 31st, at Fort Dodge....Hope your week ahead is a good one.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3,1998

Rainy and cool today. But, weather was ok most of the day, so the 22nd Annual Octoberfest of Bands could be held. The sun came out for a few minutes this morning at 9:30, just as the parade started. And, the rain didn't return until about 3 this afternoon, after the "field competion" was completed at Goodenow Field. Twenty-eight bands in the parade and 9 in the field competition. Another sucessful event. Judy Neiss was the chairperson again for this event sponsored by the Chamber. The first Octoberfest of Bands in the 70's was headed by Dean Tilton, who stayed on at least 10 years as chairman. Then Janet Burrows took the job for about 7 years and Judy has had it since. All those years and onlyu 3 chairpeople. I did the band-by-band broadcast of the parade again on both Am & FM, broadcasting from the judges stand down in front of Jackson County Home Furnishings FurnitureStore. Only got un-plugged once.......Maquoketa defeated Benton Van Horne last night, there, and now have a 4 and 1 recordd. Manchester West Delaware beat DeWitt to remain undefeated. Maquoketa, DeWitt and Western Dubuque are all tied for 2nd place with 4 and 1 records......The Maquoketa Girls Cross Country team is doing well again and ranked in the top-10 in Iowa......The Dollar General Store this week moved from downtown Maquoketa to much bigger building on West Platt Street, occupied for many years by A-1 TV & Appliance, and before that, Yeagers'S TV and Appliance. Lots of remodeling of the building and it looks nice. They have been doing LOTS of business since the move, and have a new paved parking lot too, with parking for over 25 cars. It was a big loss for downtown Maquoketa though and now everyone is wondering what will go in where they moved out, on the corner of South Main and Pleasant Streets.....Bob Koranda, son of Arnold Koranda, who owns A-1 TV and Appliances, started his own TV store this week in downtown Maquoketa, with his father's blessing. Arnold plans to go out of TV sales at his location and concentrate on appliances. Bob's new store is in the building that in the old days was the home of Manning's Meat Market, then later the JC Penney Catalog Store and has been empty for quite awhile. Arnold's wife,Sue, is opening a party supply store downtown in the building that for many years was Spalding's Footwear. It will open soon. Carrie Brock, who owns Brock's Flowers and Gifts on North Main and a gift store in downtown DeWitt, has purchased the Doland Jewelers building downtown and will establish a gift store in it, but still keep the North Main floral shop.....Clay and Holly Romer are busy remodeling and redecorating the Dolch's bakery building and will re-open the bakery in November. The new oven arrived last week. Dub willl continue to operate Connell Supply Roof and Siding business with his dad, Dub, and Holly will run the bakery.....Maquoketa will be getting an l8-unit Senior Citizens Apartment Complex downtown, behind my theatre. The buildings that at one time housed Bob Head's Auto Sales, Hayes Brothers Dairy and Harrington Appliances, will all be torn down and that entire half-block area across from the new City Hall, will be used for the new housing, which will be a good thing for downtown. Davenport and Maquoketa group doing it.....Busy day at the fairgrounds tomorrow...the annual Pioneer Day, sponsored by the Historical Society. The new Jackson County Drafthorse Association will put on their first event as part of the daylong entertainment........Have a good week.
